The definition nobody gives you
The difference between accent lighting and general lighting is intent. It is not coverage. Point it at a specimen tree, a stone column, a water feature, a front door and stop. The dark part is not an oversight. It is the reason the lit thing stands out.The concept is simple to say and hard to hold to. Pick the handful worth seeing and stop there. The pull is always to light one more thing, and holding it is the entire skill.
What is worth accenting
Some things take light well and some do not. Anything with texture picks up light and shows it off, because light raking across a rough surface creates shadow and shadow creates interest. Flat painted siding mostly just gets brighter. Shape helps too: a strong silhouette, a distinct form.
Where accent plans fall apart
The failure mode is easy to describe: too many accents. The homeowner sees one lit feature and wants more, then a third, then the corners of the house, then the shrubs. At some point there is no dark left to contrast against, and the accents stop being accents. A disciplined plan leaves most of the property dark on purpose. The best accent plans read as sparse in a drawing and correct once you are standing in front of the house after dark.
Accent lighting next to the other outdoor categories
Accent lighting is usually one layer of several. Landscape lighting handles the yard. Security lighting

Dimmer than you think
Output almost always ends up too high. After dark the threshold is low, and overshooting looks harsh rather than impressive. The goal is to draw attention, not to interrogate the shrubbery.
Uplight and downlight
Direction is a mood decision. Uplighting comes from below, so it feels staged, in a good way on the right subject. Downlighting comes from above, the way light normally does, so nobody notices the technique.
Accent lighting is not set and forget
Anything aimed at planting drifts out of alignment over the years. A shrub uplit perfectly this spring will have swallowed the fixture in three years. It is not a fault, it is just how it works. Re aiming is worth doing periodically.Aim gets checked the way everything else here is judged: by walking out at night and seeing what the light is doing.
Having a plan drawn
The choices only make sense in front of the actual house, which is why the design starts with a visit. EverCrest Lighting does accent lighting as part of a full outdoor lighting plan for residential and commercial properties across Upstate South Carolina and Western North Carolina, based in Greenville.
