The back of the house has a different job
The front of a property is a view. The patio is for people sitting in it. Everything changes when you become the audience from within. Nobody cares how the patio reads from the road. What matters is whether the space still works after dark. The short version: do not treat the back as an afterthought of the front. A roofline system does a great deal for the front of a house and very little for the space behind it. Two spaces, two separate sets of requirements to satisfy.
The thing that empties a patio
A single glaring bulb will empty a patio faster than no light at all. A bare bulb at eye height makes everything behind it disappear, so the yard turns into a black wall. Aim for illumination without a visible bulb.
String lights are not a shortcut, they are a real technique
Strung lights above a patio give the space an edge overhead. A patio without them has no top to it. Add a canopy of light and the area has walls it did not have. Warm and dim is what you want, since bright overhead light is
https://evercrestlighting.com/contact/ the wrong mood entirely. The good version rarely costs more than the bad version, because aim and color temperature are free decisions.
How the pieces stack
A patio works best with a few layers rather than one solution. Something overhead for general warmth. Something low for the steps, the edges and the path in. And a little accent somewhere at the edge. Put them on separate controls if you can, because the dinner setting and the cleaning up setting are not the same.
Restaurants and businesses face this too
For a business with outdoor seating, the lighting decides whether those tables get used after sunset. Warm overhead light is the difference between seating outside and not. The same rules apply, only the consequences are measured in covers.
The part that pays for itself
An unlit patio stops being usable in October. With light, the hours stop being the limit. Mild evenings happen most of the year here, and the dark is what keeps people indoors. The lighting is the thing standing between a nice evening and an unused patio.
Warm light and the bug question
Outdoor light brings company on a warm evening. Insects are drawn more strongly to the cool end, which is a second argument for keeping patio light warm. It will not make a patio bug free, and that is not a claim worth making. But it is worth factoring in.Worth adding: whatever runs along the roof edge above should match, so the two do not disagree with each other.
